Ah the digital world. Sometimes we simply take for granted how much content is available to us at any given moment. That fact is more apparent today, more than ever.
On the day this article comes out, several cities all over the world are under strict quarantine. This is a measure implemented by governments in order to help quell the spread of COVID-19, a dangerous virus that’s caused a worldwide pandemic. While we are all stuck at home, people have been trying to find different ways to entertain themselves. Myself included.
Today, I just realized that there is so much content to consume!
Streaming services have revolutionized the way people watch television and movies. It allows people to watch when they want and how they want, in the comfort of their own homes. No need for pricey admission tickets, paying for parking, and overpriced popcorn.
First up, we have the different streaming services available. The most popular one is Netflix. It hosts a variety of shows both old and new. It features movies from yesteryear and new ones. For some countries, Disney+ has become available as well which features many fan-favorite franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel on top of classic stories from the House of Mouse.
Also available are more specialized streaming services such as the WWE Network for wrestling fans. This service houses the largest library of wrestling related videos in the entire world.
Curiosity Stream is a popular choice for people who wants to learn more about their surroundings. Think of it as the Discovery Channel back when it focused more on science and actual discovery instead of reality shows.
But I’ll be remiss if I do not mention YouTube, arguably the original streaming service. The best part about this is it’s free, just watch a few seconds of ads per video which is still better than 10minutes of commercials for a 20min show.
YouTube is home to videos and channels dedicated to anything and everything. They are made by anyone and everyone as well. You can expect to find high-quality videos done with the latest equipment and shooting techniques. You can also watch talking heads who use a simple webcam to talk about a topic of interest.
There’s about 300 hours of videos uploaded onto YouTube every minute so the possibilities of finding the content you want are essentially endless. There’s something for everybody.
Ah, video games. Ever since I’ve held the classic NES controllers, I’ve been hooked on them. And a lot of people are too. It transports us to a whole new world and an interactive way of story-telling. Instead of just watching or being a spectator, you get to participate in the story itself. Other than that, video games allow us to blow stuff up in the virtual world. What’s more stress-relieving than that?
There are so many topics, categories, and things to break down when it comes to video games. But for the purpose of this article, the only thing we need to know is that different platforms exist for gaming. You have the almighty PC and powerful modern consoles such as Playstation 4, XBOX One, and the Nintendo Switch. The advantage of these platforms is they have digital services available. This means you can buy games online, download them, and play. No need to go to malls to get the latest brain smashing game.
Then you have nostalgic games as well, especially for the PC. Services such as GOG.com and Steam have created a virtual library of games which include all-time classics. Some provide the same experience and others are remastered to give a modern look and feel.
Others have collections of old consoles with old games as well. They have the option to replay classic Mario on their NES or Pokemon Red on GameBoy. Of course, emulators are available as well which you can download on your PC or Android device so you can play retro games as well.
Read a book. This is one of the most common advice given to people who are bored or have nothing else to do. Fortunately, the internet and digital innovation has provided platforms to find the right book for you as well. No need to reserve books in your local store anymore. No need to go to book sales to find older copies of a series you started reading in the middle.
Platforms such as Amazon (yes, they actually started with books rather than being the biggest online shop in the world) offer an amazing environment for book lovers.
Ebooks and Audiobooks are sold all over the internet. They make for easy consumption of stories. If you haven’t read any of the Harry Potter books, this is a good way to start.
You can learn at your own pace, at your own time. That’s what online learning is all about. And many people like me wish that option was offered in school. Not everyone can learn at the same pace. Anyway, today lessons about almost any subject can be translated into digital form. Using videos and interactive media, we can all learn something new through online learning.
Platforms like Udemy house huge libraries of online learning material from “how to be a graphic artist” to “learning Mandarin”. Always wanted to play guitar but you’re shy because you might be a slow learner? Get an online lesson instead. You don’t have to interact with anyone, you just have to watch videos, read articles, and basically learn on your own. The course is a great guide that provides all the materials and you consume it on your own.
Then of course we have social media that is home to everything and almost everyone nowadays. From your closest friends and family to all manners of people, companies, and brands, they are all online on social media.
This gives you an unending stream of information from different aspects of your interest. You get to see what your parents are up to, how did your brother spend his vacation, or what did Sally from 4th grade have for lunch the other day. The stream is endless.
Today, there’s so much content that we can go through and we go through. People consume content at a rapid pace. A video on YouTube can get thousands of hits one day then completely forgotten about the next.
But with content, what’s important is to serve its purpose. Whether its to entertain you or provide new information to the audience to help them make an informed decision, content can be used in many different ways. Even helping to build your brand.
With the right strategy and good content, you can elevate your brand in the eyes of your customers. And I can help you with that in more ways than one. Contact me today and let’s talk about building content for your brand.
